Nina Turchyn

Biography

Nina Turchyn (maiden name: Shyshatska) was born on August 13, 1941 in Petrykivka. The daughter of the second-generation master Mariia Shyshatska, Petrykivka painting has been a part of her life since early childhood.

She graduated from the Petrykivka Children’s Art School named after Tetiana Pata in 1962, in the class of Fedir Panko. Even before graduation, in 1958, she started working at the Petrykivka Druzhba Painting Factory, one of the first artists of the new generation in this team. Later, she worked at the Experimental Workshop of Petrykivka Painting at the Dnipropetrovs’k Art and Production Plant. Now she works at the Petrykivka Folk Art Center.

Artistic Practice

Nina Turchyn is one of the artists who combines a variety of subjects and ornamental motifs with a deep sense of the Petrykivka tradition. She creates fairy-tale and decorative panels, bouquets of traditional flowers in her own interpretation, and thematic compositions.

Recognition

Honored Master of Folk Art of Ukraine (2007). Member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine (1990 - according to other sources, 1980). The works are presented in the National Museum of Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art and in the collection of the large representative album “Petrykivka Painting” (2015-2016).
