Nadiia Tymoshenko

Biography

Nadiia Mytrofanivna Tymoshenko (maiden name Vovk) was born in 1908 in Petrykivka. She learned Petrykivka painting and vytynanka from her mother, who painted houses, flowerpots, and sledges. She is the sister of the master Vasyl Vovk. The art was passed down naturally in the Vovk family, without schooling.

She was formed as a creative person in the first third of the twentieth century, when Petrykivka painting was still an integral part of traditional home decor. Together with other artists of her generation, such as Tetiana Pata, Nadia Bilokin, and Hanna Isaieva, she is one of those who laid the foundation for Petrykivka painting as an independent art.

She died in 1971.

Artistic Practice

She painted mainly traditional bouquets of fantastic flowers, frieze paintings and individual branches with flowers for architectural decor. The works are dominated by contrasting color relationships, aniline paints diluted with egg white.
