Ivan Zavhorodnii
Biography
Ivan Zavhorodnii is a second-generation Petrykivka master, a student of Tetiana Patia. He studied at the Petrykivka School of Decorative Drawing, which operated from 1936 to 1941. He is the husband of the master Halyna Prudnikova (Prudnikova-Zavhorodnia).
In 1958, he was among the sixteen founders of the under-lacquer painting workshop at the Vilna Selyanka artel, which became the basis of the future Druzhba factory. He remained at the factory even after its reorganization, where he acted as a mentor for younger artists, in particular for those who came in the 1960s. Among those for whom he was one of the mentors were the masters who later became part of Vasyl Sokolenko’s creative groups.
Artistic Practice
He worked in the vein of traditional Petrykivka ornamentation inherited from Tetiana Patia. A common feature of the artists of his circle is the preservation of individual taste, favorite ornamental motifs and colors despite the common art school.
